On Sunday 19th December 2010, frozen Britain looks to be heading for an extremely white Christmas. The Highways Agency website warns that exceptionally low temperatures and snow continue to affect the country today. “While the severe weather continues, road users are advised to check road and weather conditions before setting out, and take extra care if they have to travel.”

Highways Agency Salt Spreading

Salt spreading is an essential part of The Highways Agency’s winter service and their fleet continues to lay salt and clear snow across the strategic road network in England. The strategic road network covers most motorways and significant trunk A roads but local roads and minor routes will in most cases remain untreated. They also warn that “While salt is very effective at reducing the risk of ice formation, at very low temperatures there can still be a risk of ice on road surfaces even when salt has been spread.” They say that drivers should take extra care in areas of increased danger of ice such as bends and gradients. They also advise against non-essential travel in worst affected areas and suggest that people consider delaying setting out until conditions improve.

Severe Weather Emergency Kit

However, many people will be hoping to take to the nation’s roads this week, heading home or to visit friends for the Christmas holidays. Drivers who do decide to travel are advised to check weather forecasts and travel bulletins before they set off and to be prepared with a severe weather emergency kit including blanket, warm clothes, food and drink, a fully charged mobile phone, boots, a torch and a shovel for the snow. Carpet squares or cat litter can be used to put under tyres when stuck.
