In 2010 the online dating service, RSVP surveyed more than 3000 people, and discovered that 50% of them had used online dating before, and 10% had been successful in finding partners online. And that’s just the people who used RSVP. There are hundreds of dating sites out there that cater to all kinds of different people. There are the obvious gay and straight sites, but there are also sites that cater specifically for different ethnic groups, or religious affiliations.
Stigma of Online Dating
With so many sites out there, and so many people using them, why is there still so much stigma surrounding the world of online dating? Looking back 10 to 15 years, it’s understandable why people would be hesitant about online dating. It was new, which meant the success stories weren’t there to back it up, other people weren’t doing it there was no one to talk to about it, and people were still scared of perversion on the internet.
The question remains though, if more people are accepting of online dating, if the success stories are there and there are plenty of people you can talk to about it, why are people still afraid to join, or admit to being a part of the online dating world? I guess old habits really do die hard.
