The death toll from the Christchurch earthquake currently stands at 166. Of these, 123 had been identified as of the 15th March. While there have been many funerals in the city over the last two weeks, the memorial service will allow the people of Christchurch and Canterbury to collectively grieve for loved ones as well as the loss of heritage buildings and parts of their city.
Prince William to Pay Tribute at Christchurch Earthquake 2011 Memorial Service
The Christchurch Earthquake 2011 Memorial Service will be held in North Hagley Park on Friday the 18th March. Estimates are that more than 100,000 people will gather for the event. The service starts unofficially at 10:30 am with a number of musical tributes. These will be followed by the formal service that starts at 12 noon.
The Dean of Christchurch Cathedral, the Very Reverend Peter Beck, will lead the service that will include tributes from Prince William, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, and the Governor General. A two minute silence at 12:51 pm will allow mourners to remember the day the earthquake tore their lives apart.
